Disappeared after the Wagner rebellion… Confusing statement about the Russian general
A new statement about Russian General Sergey Surovikin, who was controversial in Russia after the Wagner uprising and was said to have been detained, raised questions.
The Wagner Russian mercenary group, led by Yevgeny Prigojin, challenged the Vladimir Putin administration last month, creating an explosive effect around the world.
American intelligence wrote that General Sergey Surovikin, one of the most important figures in the Russian army, was aware of Prigokhin’s plans for rebellion in advance. Speaking to the New York Times, US officials said they were trying to find out if Surovikin had helped plan the rebellion.
Surovikin, who previously played a major role in the Syrian war and was commander of Russian forces in Ukraine until January 2023, is known as a highly respected and supported name in the Russian military.
Deputy Andrey Kartapolov, chairman of the Defense Committee of the lower house of Russia’s parliament, said that Surovikin is currently resting. According to the audio recording reflected in the Russian press, Kartapolov said: “Surovikin is resting at the moment. He is not available,” he said.
