Strong accusations against Gal Luft
Gal Luft, the head of a US think tank, is accused of acting as a Chinese spy, trying to secure Iranian oil and arms sales.
Federal prosecutors said Luft agreed to support certain Chinese policies by secretly recruiting an unidentified former US official. Luft also allegedly mediates arms sales to clients in China, Libya, the United Arab Emirates and Kenya.
Luft allegedly lobbied to persuade a former US official who was an adviser to former President Donald Trump to promote Chinese interests in the United States. In addition, Luft’s articles on behalf of this former official were published in the Chinese media and sent to American universities.
Luft is co-director of the Institute for Global Security Analysis, which focuses on US energy and security. This organization, founded by Luft, lists former CIA director James Woolsey as an adviser.
Luft, accused of mediating in the sale of arms without authorization from the United States,
According to federal prosecutors,
He helped Chinese companies sell weapons to Libya and tried to sell weapons called “aerial bombs and rockets” to the United Arab Emirates.
Luft is also alleged to have ordered a friend of his to make Iranian oil appear as Brazilian to circumvent US sanctions.
Luft, who was arrested in southern Cyprus on February 17, 2023 on US charges, escaped after being released on bail. If he is found guilty, Luft could face many years in prison.
