US response to Erdogan’s departure from the EU: Between the two
The United States announced that it has always supported and continues to support Turkey’s desire to become a member of the European Union (EU), but the application process is between Turkey and the EU.
“Our focus is on Sweden, which is ready to join the NATO alliance,” a White House National Security Council spokesman said.
WHAT DID ERDOGAN SAY?
Making a statement at Istanbul’s Atatürk airport ahead of the NATO Leaders’ Summit in Lithuania this week, Erdoğan said: “I appeal to these countries that have kept Turkey waiting at the gates of the European Union for more than 50 years. But I will also scream in Vilnius. First, clear the way for Turkey in the European Union and let’s prepare the way for Sweden, as we did in Finland.”
Erdogan, who said he would meet NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, commented: “We want the promises made to be kept,” and this statement became the agenda.
