Collapsed apartment: 8 dead, including 2 children
According to initial reports, 8 people died as a result of the collapse of an apartment building on a plot of land in the city of Recife, in northeastern Brazil.
According to the BBC report, the building, located on a property in Recife, collapsed for unknown reasons. According to initial reports, 8 people, including 2 children aged 5 and 8, lost their lives in the incident.
Local media reported that a 43-year-old mother and her 19-year-old son were among the dead. While 4 people were rescued from the rubble, there is still no word on 6 people believed to be under the rubble.
The site, which residents describe as “tomb buildings”, is located in the Janga neighborhood, in the São Paulo suburb of the city of Recife. Authorities reported that most of the residents of the building, which collapsed at 6:35 a.m. local time, were asleep at the time of the incident.
Although the cause of the building collapse cannot be determined with certainty, it is suspected that the heavy rains that the city of Recife has been exposed to in recent days may have been effective in the incident. The local government announced that the rain is expected to continue and warned the public to move to safe buildings. (AA)
