Impressive research on black people living in poor neighborhoods in the US.
According to Stat News, research conducted at the University of Pennsylvania examined the link between aging and low socioeconomic status by measuring biological aging.
In the study, it was observed that the rate of aging of black people can be affected by environmental factors, regardless of income and educational level.
This effect, which is defined as “wear and tear”, accelerates the aging process due to stress factors such as racism and poverty in societies. This effect can increase the rate of hypertension, mental illness, and infant and maternal mortality in pregnancy.
While the research was conducted on 2,960 US citizens over the age of 50, the data for the study was taken from the “Health and Retirement Study.”
Corey McMillan, one of the study’s authors, noted that the study showed that the effect of environmental stress on aging cannot be ignored and that black people are more exposed to “environmental racism.”
Isabel Yannatos, the other author of the study, pointed out that living at a disadvantage and being exposed to discrimination can increase the stress factor.
The research was published in the journal PLOS ONE. (AA)
