Start of Spanish presidency: ‘Great EU summit with South America this autumn’ Related articles

Spain presides over the European Union from this weekend. The presidency started not in Spain, but in Ukraine. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has big plans, including holding an EU summit with South America this fall, reports Spain correspondent Jorn Lucas. But it remains to be seen whether Sánchez will remain prime minister after the July election.

During his visit to Ukraine, Sánchez announced that Spain would allocate 55 million euros for the country’s post-war reconstruction. “Huge symbolism in the early presidency,” says Lucas. “Spain has its own plans for this presidency, but it also shows very clearly what priority number one is: a strong and united Europe, and therefore also support for Ukraine.”

Europe and South America

According to Lucas, the country also has plans in the field of artificial intelligence and sustainability. Furthermore, Spain wants to organize an important European summit with South America this autumn.

‘Historically, Spain obviously has strong ties to the area, but diplomatically things are completely silent between Europe and South America. Spain wants to improve these relations and take the initiative”. It should, according to Lucas. “Because China is investing heavily in that area.”

Elections

It is not yet clear whether Sánchez can carry out his plans, as national elections take place in three weeks. “Sánchez could very well lose the election later this month,” Lucas said. “And everyone can think that a changing of the guard isn’t really good for ongoing conversations.” For example, on the payment of European public debt. Spain and the Netherlands have jointly drawn up a proposal and are calling for more flexibility.’
