Mossad: We captured the leader of an Iranian cell preparing to attack in southern Cyprus
In a written Mossad statement, it was claimed that an Iranian cell led by Yusuf Shehabez Abbas Alilu was discovered to be planning an attack on Israeli businessmen in the Greek Cypriot Administration.
In the statement, it was claimed that Alilu, the head of the cell associated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, was interrogated in Iran before turning over to the Greek Cypriot administration and confessed to the details of the attack plan.
The statement claimed that the attack plan was passed on to the security forces of the Greek Cypriot administration and that the cell was destroyed in this way, and that the cell received instructions and weapons from the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.
Israeli army radio also broadcast a videotape of Alilu confessing to Israeli intelligence the details of the attack plan, which it said was linked to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.
No official statement from the Greek Cypriot administration on the matter has yet been made.
Iran has yet to comment on Israel’s claims.
The Israel Public Broadcasting Organization, KAN, announced Sunday that Iran’s plan to attack “Israeli targets and civilian Jews” in southern Cyprus was blocked in cooperation with US and Israeli intelligence.
Israel’s Yediot Ahranot newspaper also reported that GCA intelligence conducted an operation against a cell structure and detained cell members. (AA)
