40 vehicles burned, 150 arrested
In France, on June 27, 17-year-old Muslim teenager Nahel (Nael) was shot dead by police during a traffic stop near the city of Nanterre, and violent protests began, especially in Paris.
French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announced today that 150 people have been detained in violent protests.
In his statement to the press yesterday, Interior Minister Darmanin also stated that about 40 vehicles were burned and several public buildings were damaged during the events and that 24 policemen were injured. Darmanin also noted that approximately 2,000 police and gendarmes have been deployed in and around Paris.
French President Emmanuel Macron yesterday expressed his condolences to the Nahelin family on social media, saying: “It is up to Justice to determine the truth and assign responsibilities. I hope your work can be completed quickly. In such a situation, what Nanterre and the Nation need is respect and tranquility, ”he said.
Authorities announced that an investigation has been launched against the police officer who shot Naheli. While no information on the Nahelin surname was provided, the family’s lawyer, Yassine Bouzrou, was seen to have used the name Nahelin as Nael in his written statements.
