The opposition leader who lost the elections in Greece resigns

A lightning development took place in Greece, which had two consecutive elections this year.

Alexis Tsipras, leader of the left-wing Syriza party, which fell short of expectations in Sunday’s elections by failing to form a government after the first elections held in recent months, announced he was leaving his post.

“It is time to start a new cycle. “The negative election result should and will be the beginning of this cycle,” she said. Tsipras also stressed that there should be reform within the party.

Tsipras, who has served as his party’s leader since 2009, served as Greece’s prime minister from 2015 to 2019.

CIPRAS: I AM PROUD

Tsipras and his party, which rose to power following the economic crisis Greece experienced in the early 2000s, lost to Kiriakos Mitsotakis’s New Democracy Party in 2019. In Sunday’s election, Syriza received 17.8 percent. of the vote, while New Democracy got 40.5 percent of the vote.

Stating that he wants to pave the way for the election of a new leader for the party and stressing that he will not be a candidate, Tsipras said: “I am very proud of everything that has happened here. On this difficult path, concessions were made, difficult decisions were made, there were injuries and losses, but this path left its mark on history.
