However, the Dutch government wants to look for alternatives. However, the promises made to Ukraine will not be compromised, according to defense specialist Patrick Bolder of The Hague Center for Strategic Studies. “Several tanks have already been delivered,” he says. “And something like 170 tanks are being prepared together with Germany. Including that Leopard 1.’

“Especially now European security is at stake”

Furthermore, the tanks would also be available elsewhere in Europe which could be exported to Ukraine. However, he points out that the issue has been going on for some time throughout Switzerland. “The question always arises whether Switzerland should remain neutral or not, and I think it is cheap of them to stick to that neutrality,” says Bolder. “Especially now that European security is at stake”.

“Not to choose is to choose Russia”

Bolder therefore believes that by remaining neutral, Switzerland is de facto opting for Russia. “And that’s easy for Switzerland, because it’s surrounded by EU and NATO countries, so the chance of them falling victim to Russian aggression is minimal,” he explains. “Neutrality is beautiful, but solidarity would be more beautiful.”

However, he stresses that the tanks will not be needed immediately: the delivery of the Leopard 1 tanks was expected in the long term anyway. Especially since the nine brigades trained and equipped by the West already have tanks. “But obviously the more there are, the better for Ukraine,” he continues. Because they will lose anyway. You have to deal with it.’
