43 people arrested in an operation against organized crime in Italy
According to news from the ANSA agency based on security sources, an operation was carried out against the Ndrangheta criminal organization, based in the Calabria region, in the south of the country, by the Italian Gendarmerie (Carabinieri). 43 suspects were caught in the operation.
The suspects were accused of belonging to a mafia-type criminal organization, corruption, fraud, extortion, rigging of public bids, illegal competition and homicide.
Among the detainees is Mario Oliverio, 70, former head of the Regional Government of Calabria. Olivero is suspected of complicity.
In addition to Oliverio, among the detainees are other names that had previously served in the regional administration.
THE SECURITY OF GERMANY AND AUSTRIA ALSO SUPPORTS
In a statement from the European Union Police Organization (Europol), it was indicated that both they and the German and Austrian security forces supported the operation based in the city of Crotone in Italy.
It was also shared that during the operation in question, 16 companies, 25 properties and 15 vehicles with a value of more than 5 million euros were seized.
Ndrangheta is known as one of the most dangerous criminal organizations in Italy.
