Record broken: highest number of immigrants in Germany since 1950
According to data from the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the number of those who left the country where 2 million 666 thousand people immigrated last year was registered at 1 million 204 thousand.
The number of net migration to the country, which was announced at 329,000 for 2021, increased to approximately 1,462,000 last year. Thus, the annual number of net migrations rose to the highest level since records began to be kept in 1950.
In the Destatis statement, the arrival of “those who want to protect themselves in the Russia-Ukraine war” from Ukraine to Germany was cited as the main reason for the increase in net migration compared to 2021.
About 1.1 million people came to Germany from Ukraine last year, and 138 thousand people immigrated from Germany to Ukraine.
REDUCTION OF 210 THOUSAND PEOPLE
Compared to 2021, the number of immigrants in Germany decreased by 1 million 323 thousand and the number of people leaving the country decreased by 210 thousand last year.
The number of people who came to Germany from 27 European countries was 87 thousand more than those who immigrated from Germany. This figure was recorded at 81 thousand in 2021.
People immigrated to Germany, especially from Romania, Poland and Bulgaria.
According to Destatis figures, net migration from Syria to Germany was 68,000 last year, while from Afghanistan it was 55,000.
