UN threatens Netanyahu
UN Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq answered questions from reporters at the daily press briefing.
When asked about Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s comments on Palestinian aspirations for a state, Haq stressed that the UN continues to support a two-state solution, in which Israel and Palestine will live side by side, in peace and security, in accordance with the resolutions of the UN Security Council and the Oslo Agreement.
“WE REMAIN RESPONSIBLE”
“We are aware of (Netanyahu’s) speeches and will focus on his actions,” Haq said. We hold the parties accountable for what they have previously committed.” he said.
“SHOCKING INCREASE” IN VIOLENCE IN THE SETTLEMENTS
On the other hand, Lynn Hastings, UN Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territories, warned of a “shocking” increase in settler violence in the occupied territories.
Hastings noted that while there was an average of two events per day in 2022, it has increased to three per day this year.
Stating that there were 21 acts of settler violence against Palestinians in just a three-day period last week, Hastings shared the information that 115 people were injured as a result of these attacks.
“For the attacks to stop, the criminals must be held accountable,” Hastings said. saying
THE NETANYAHU DISCUSSIONS
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had argued at a recent session of the parliament’s foreign security committee that they were ready to help the Palestinian Authority and that it was in their own interest.
Netanyahu responded to the question about establishing an independent Palestinian state: “Palestine’s desire to establish an independent state must be suppressed.” he had responded.
Negotiations between Palestine and Israel were suspended in April 2014 due to Israel’s rejection of the conditions for the release of former detainees, the cessation of illegal settlement activities, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders. (AA)
