Netflix sues Turkish donors

Three Turks in Germany opened a chain of doner kebabs under the German name ‘Haus des Geldes-Money house’, inspired by the famous Spanish production Netflix series ‘La casa de papel’. The inauguration was made with the campaign “Refunds for 1 cent”, thousands of Germans queued, doner kebabs were sold, accompanied by the police. However, this attempt is now in court.

The doner chain named “Haus des Döner”, which started last year, spread to many European countries, especially Germany, and the number of branches approached 60. Since the wife of one of the partners was a fan of the famous TV series, they developed this idea and quickly opened doner shops in the Turkish-dominated state of North Rhine-Westphalia. They even began to give branches.

However, the use of both the sign and the characters from the famous Netflix series such as color, typography and drawing created problems. Netflix, a giant producer of series and movies worth 200 billion dollars, has applied to the European Union Patent and Trademark Authority (EUIPO) to ban the names and symbols used by Turkish doner kebabs. An agreement was reached with a famous law firm in Munich. The name and patent rights of Yasin twentybes and İlhan Baysan, which have reached approximately 60 doner shops, are in jeopardy due to the lawsuit.

TURKISH PARTNERS: “WE CAN AGREE”

While Netflix wanted a ban stating that Turkish doner shops use their own brands and there is a possibility of mixing brands, Turkish doner kebab maker Yasin twentybeş announced that negotiations are ongoing and they may reach an agreement with Netflix. Both parties submitted their comments in writing to the patent office last month.

NOW “MASTER OF DONER”

However, another disagreement arose between the partners and this time İlhan Baysan (46) who let his other two partners open a doner shop called “Haus des Döners” in Cologne.

Baysan, who goes by the name ‘Lord of the Rings’ and the source of the Netflix series, stated that he has further developed the doner kebab concept and announced that branches will soon open in Warsaw, Vienna and Bürkeş.

Thus, the number of brands Netflix fought with increased to two. The Germans, who initially attacked places advertised as “returns to 1 cent,” now have a keen interest in doner kebabs from Turkish businessmen. It is eagerly awaited what kind of decision the patent institution will make.
