Foreign countries eye Russian escalation with concern Related articles

Foreign countries are concerned about the rapid and wholly unpredictable military escalation in Russia, where the troops of Putin and boss Wagner Prigozhin have come to blows. The White House Security Council is following the situation closely, as are various European heads of state. The Ukrainian government in Kiev calls it “just the beginning”.

Netherlands – close up

The Dutch defense ministry is following the situation in Russia “closely”, a spokesman said when asked. However, according to the Ministry of Defense, it is still too early to draw any conclusions. The Wagner mercenary army has turned against the top echelons of the Russian military and is said to have taken control of the southern Russian city of Rostov. The disagreement between the Wagner mercenaries and the Russian military leadership is obviously bad news for Putin. However, the war is not going as the Russian president would like, the spokesman said.

United States – look

The White House National Security Council says it is monitoring the situation and will consult with allies and partners on developments.

European Commission – internal Russian affair

The European Commission sees the situation in Russia as “an internal Russian matter,” says EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell. According to him, Brussels is closely following developments in Russia and is in constant contact with the European diplomatic mission in Moscow. The Committee also maintains contacts with individual Member States and with international partners, including the G7 countries.

European Council – Russian Affair

Charles Michel, president of the European Council, also said on Twitter that it was a “Russian” issue. He added that European support for Ukraine is “unwavering”.

Germany – closely monitored

“We are closely monitoring developments in Russia,” a spokesman for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said. The German government also announced today that it will send more weapons to Ukraine. These are 45 Gepard, armored anti-aircraft guns. Of these, 34 are already in Ukraine. Fifteen will be added in the coming weeks and another thirty over the course of the year. This is done in cooperation with the United States.

France – meticulous

French President Emmanuel Macron is also “closely following” the situation in Russia, according to French government officials. “The president is monitoring the situation very closely. We will continue to focus on supporting Ukraine,” the Elysee said.

Poland – look

The Polish president has consulted with the prime minister and the defense ministry on the situation in Russia, President Duda said today, adding that Warsaw is monitoring the situation.

United Kingdom – Situation in change

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak declined to comment on whether it is good that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s leadership has been questioned. Sunak spoke to the BBC of an “evolving situation” on which his government “must sit”. “We are in contact with our allies and I will speak to them later, to assume our responsibilities and save civilian lives.”
