Irregular migrants await rescue in the Mediterranean

Announcing on social networks the calls for help from immigrants in the Mediterranean, the civil organization called “Alarm Phone” shared that a distress call was received from a boat carrying 50 people from Libya.

According to Alarm Phone’s actions on Twitter, irregular migrants on the ship in the international waters of the Mediterranean said the ship’s engines stopped and began to leak.

In the posts where it was indicated that the corresponding authorities were alerted for an emergency response and a rapid rescue operation, it was pointed out that the irregular migrants are in a desperate situation and waiting to be rescued.

Alarm Phone also called the authorities who can carry out rescue operations in the region, saying: “Water keeps leaking on the boat. The situation is critical. We call on the relevant authorities to intervene. Don’t let them sink in.” She used his statements.

Alarm Phone claimed that the Libyan authorities, to whom they provided information on the matter, rejected their calls for help as it was a “holiday”.

Flavio Di Giacomo, spokesman for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mediterranean Coordination Office, said about the group of migrants seeking rescue on his Twitter account: “As soon as you see the migrants in the sea, they must be rescued immediately. It is not the first time that Libya has responded in this way. It is now essential that European rescue ships rescue these people and bring them to a safe harbour. (Not to Libya)”. he performed the assessment of it.

THE PROBLEM OF Irregular Migration in the Mediterranean

In the irregular migratory flow to Europe, the Central Mediterranean route stands out as one of the routes where intense mobility has been observed in recent years.

On this route, European non-governmental organizations often rescue irregular migrants asking for help at sea, rather than European government officials. These NGOs have difficulties in evacuating the irregular migrants they rescue from time to time because the EU member states do not provide them with a ‘safe haven’.

The first place where migrants who can cross the Mediterranean or are rescued on their own set foot in Europe is the island of Lampedusa, which is the closest land part of Italy to North Africa.

A large number of irregular immigrants die every year trying to cross the Mediterranean, due to the capsizing of the boat or the lack of air and water due to overcrowding in the boats. (AA)
