Republican Will Hurd has announced his candidacy for the US presidential election. He is an outspoken critic of Donald Trump and is the twelfth of his party to attempt to defeat the former president in the primaries.
Hurd, 45, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 2014 to 2020, emphasized unity, economy, and equal opportunity for all Americans in his announcement video. Hurd has worked for the CIA in the Middle East and South Asia.
In 2019, he clashed with Trump, who tweeted that four Democratic congressmen should go back where they came from. Hurd said at the time the tweets were “racist and xenophobic”. For a time, Hurd was the only black Republican in the House of Representatives.
Not the only black Republican presidential candidate, Tim Scott has already run for president. Trump is still far ahead of his competitors in the polls. In July 2024 it will be known who will be the presidential candidate on behalf of the Republican party. The elections are in November of that year.
