“Routine” step.
The strait, which separates China from the autonomous island of Taiwan, has been a frequent source of tension as Beijing steps up political and military pressure to force Taipei to accept Chinese sovereignty. US naval vessels, and sometimes those of their allies, have passed through the strait regularly in recent years. China regards such missions as provocations.
The US Navy said the ship, USCGC Stratton, made a “routine” passage through the Taiwan Strait “through waters where freedom of navigation” applies “in accordance with international law.” And: “The United States military flies, sails, and operates wherever international law permits.”
