A US Coast Guard vessel passed through the Taiwan Strait on Tuesday, the US Navy said. The move came a day after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken paid a rare visit to Beijing. During that visit, the two countries agreed to stabilize their growing rivalry in order to avoid conflict.
“Routine” step.
The strait, which separates China from the autonomous island of Taiwan, has been a frequent source of tension as Beijing steps up political and military pressure to force Taipei to accept Chinese sovereignty. US naval vessels, and sometimes those of their allies, have passed through the strait regularly in recent years. China regards such missions as provocations.
The US Navy said the ship, USCGC Stratton, made a “routine” passage through the Taiwan Strait “through waters where freedom of navigation” applies “in accordance with international law.” And: “The United States military flies, sails, and operates wherever international law permits.”
