Gang war in women’s prison: 46 prisoners die

The rebellion and conflict broke out in the women’s prison in the town of Tamara in the capital Tegucigalpa in Honduras.

According to initial reports, after a confrontation between two gangs, one of the gangs set fire to a cell.

Authorities announced that most of those who died in the women’s prison died as a result of a fire, but some were shot, stabbed or beaten to death.

An investigation was launched to find out how the detainees smuggled automatic weapons and knives into the prison.

The president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, who last year launched a major operation against gangs in the country, announced that they would take a series of drastic measures “the brutal murder of women is shocking.”

The Vice Minister of Security, Julissa Villanueva, in her post on her Twitter account, affirmed that a “state of emergency” was declared in the prison and said: “I gave the order to intervene in the Tamara women’s prison in the harshest way possible . We will not tolerate deeds and idleness in this prison. The situation is dealt with as quickly as possible, accompanied by firefighters, police officers and soldiers”. she had used the phrase.

Castro fired Security Minister Ramón Savillon today and named police chief Gustavo Sánchez to replace him.

Eyewitnesses at the prison, speaking to local media, said the conflict broke out between the 18th Street Gang, one of the largest gangs in Central America, and MS-13.
