Invasion of giant snails in the US
Some neighborhoods in Broward, Florida, USA, were placed under quarantine after invasive “giant African snails”, known as one of the most dangerous species, were spotted.
Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) officials said the quarantine decision was made after snails were detected in the Miramar area of the city earlier this month, CNN reported. The quarantine prohibits moving the giant African snail, as well as plants with soil, compost, and yard waste, into or out of the area without FDACS approval.
Announcing the establishment of two treatment centers in the quarantine area, authorities plan to use an approved type of snail bait in homes to prevent snail infestation, which can harm Florida’s agriculture and natural areas.
Officials said the snails pose a risk to human health because they carry a parasite called “rat lungworm,” which can cause meningitis if it reaches the brain.
Last year, the New Port Richey area of Pasco County, Florida was also placed under quarantine after giant African snails were detected.
ONE OF THE MOST INVESTORATIVE SPECIES
The giant African snail, “one of the world’s 100 most invasive species,” is considered the biggest cause of pest problems, causing serious damage to crops and agricultural plants.
Giant African snails feed on at least 500 different plant species and can crush plaster, plastic recycling bins, and even signage.
The snails’ calcium shells have sharp edges that can burst the tires of passing vehicles. (AA)
