Notable details in SNHR’s Syria report

Documenting rights violations against civilians, SNHR published a report on the occasion of “June 20, World Refugee Day.”

In the report, which includes the information that almost half of the people were displaced during the civil war in Syria, “Syria is not a safe country, the return of millions of refugees is linked to guaranteeing a democratic political transition.” expression was used.

In the report, it was pointed out that violations by the Syrian administration and other groups caused civilians to leave the country and said: “As long as human rights violations by the Syrian authorities continue, Syrian refugees will not return to their countries. , and we do not believe that these violations will end as long as the security units remain.” It was said.

Although Syria was included in the Arab league after 12 years, it was assessed as not being a safe country for refugees.

It was claimed that the Damascus administration detained hundreds of those who returned to the country, and it was noted that hundreds of them could not be heard. In this context, it was stated that at least 874 Syrians have been forcibly returned to their country from Lebanon since the beginning of April, and at least 87 of them have been detained.

SNHR noted that the Syrian administration has launched a security investigation against the returnees and is concerned that more Syrians will be detained.

CALL FOR RESEARCH ON DISASTERS OUTSIDE GREECE

The network report called for an investigation by the Greek authorities and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to investigate the migrant disaster that occurred on June 14 off the Peloponnese peninsula in Greece.

When the boat carrying irregular migrants capsized, 81 people lost their lives and 104 people were rescued and brought to the port of Kalamata. According to Alarm Phone, a nonprofit organization, there were around 700 people on board.

It is feared that the death toll will rise as search and rescue efforts continue.

MORE THAN HALF THE COUNTRY IS DISPLACED

In the country, whose population was estimated at around 22-23 million before the civil war, 6.6 million Syrians had to leave their country. More than 3.5 million of these people took refuge in Türkiye.

According to the United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 6.5 million people have been internally displaced, while at least 14 million civilians in Syria are in need of humanitarian assistance. (AA)
