Record level of population growth in Germany
The German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) has announced the final 2022 data on population growth.
Accordingly, with the effect of immigration from abroad, especially from Ukraine, the country’s population in 2022 increased by 1 million 122 thousand people and reached a record level of 84.4 million. Thus, the country’s population increased the most since the reunification of East and West Germany.
Destatis stressed that the population increase last year was due to the arrival of foreigners to Germany
Net immigration increased from 329,000 in 2021 to 1.46 million last year. Last year, the number of Ukrainians who came to Germany was 915 thousand.
As in previous years, more people died than were born last year.
The number of deaths over births rose to 327,000. This number was recorded at 228 thousand for 2021.
While the German economy needs hundreds of thousands of skilled immigrants each year due to an aging population, the arrival of working-age immigrants last year offset the aging population. (AA)
