Former US President Donald Trump was “too busy” to hand over classified government documents to the National Archives. He said it on Monday during an interview with the American television channel Fox News.
According to Trump, he was “hasty” when he left the White House in January 2021. His belongings were said to have been mixed up with government documents at the time. “People packed up and we left. I had clothes and all kinds of personal items in boxes – loads of stuff. I have every right to have those boxes,” Trump said.
“I want to go through the boxes and get all my personal stuff out. I don’t want to deliver it yet. As you can see, I’ve been very busy,” Trump replied when Fox News host Brett Baier asked him why he hadn’t handed over the documents as well, after officials asked him to.
Court documents released earlier this month show the former president is a suspect in 37 crimes. He is suspected, among other things, of hiding documents and obstructing a criminal investigation. After leaving the White House, Trump allegedly took the documents to his Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago. Authorities seized some 13,000 items there, including 100 secret documents. This includes military information.
