Culture card of 200 euros for young people in Germany

Young people of legal age in Germany receive an allowance from the government. This year 200 euros of economic support are offered to young people who are or will be 18 years old, but not as money but as a Cultural Card (KulturPass).

As reported by the Turkish Deutsche Welle, young people will be able to participate in cultural and artistic activities with 200 euros on this card. For example, they will be able to visit museums, go to the cinema, the theater or concerts.

The scope of the card is not limited to this. Young people will be able to buy books or instruments with 200 euros on the card. However, this card can only be used at the event or store that the young people attend in person.

BUDGET OF 100 MILLION EUROS

The objective of the Culture Card is to attract young people to social life after the long period of the pandemic and encourage their interest in culture and art. In doing so, revive the local culture and art centers, artists, bookstores and non-monopolized institutions operating in this field, which lost blood during the pandemic period.

The Culture Card, which began to be implemented on June 14, is currently a pilot project. There are approximately 1.6 million different youth activities within the scope of this card.

What young people must do to benefit from the Tarjeta Cultura application is to register by entering their identity data through the application or the Internet. All young people born in 2005, residing in Germany, will be able to benefit from this right.

Claudia Roth, Minister of State for Culture and the Media, allocated a total of 100 million euros to the Culture Card. Although this figure may sound high at first, if all the young people apply for the card, an additional 50 million euros will have to be allocated.

ALSO IN OTHER EUROPEAN COUNTRIES

While implementing the Culture Card pilot project for young people, Germany took other European countries as an example. For example, in Italy, with the application called “18app”, those who turn 18 have received a check for culture and art of 500 euros since 2016. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, leader of the ruling far-right Brothers of Italy party in Italy, it announced last year that it would abolish the practice, but then canceled its plans for the time being.

In France, a budget of 300 euros is allocated to those who turn 18 from 2021. In the first year, young people spent three quarters of that budget on books. Two thirds of this was Japanese manga comics. Cinemas and theaters almost never benefited from this program.

In Spain, a cultural aid of 400 euros began to be offered to those who turned 18 since last year. Youth spent half of this support on live events.
