“Heat wave” alert in Belgium
The temperature in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, known for its cloudy and rainy weather, exceeded 31 degrees over the weekend.
In the Ardennes region, the highest altitude in the country, the temperature was measured at the level of 25-27 degrees. The Royal Meteorological Institute issued a “heat wave” warning and issued a “code yellow” alert.
By stating that ozone pollution will also be high, the Institute activated the Ozone Leakage Plan.
This alert level is to inform the general public and health and personal care professionals to take the necessary precautions, especially for people in need of care.
High temperatures and dry weather are expected to continue for at least another week. There were no sunny days in spring in the country, and the temperature was almost 10 degrees Celsius below normal. Thus, the country went into summer without spring.
High temperatures and lack of precipitation also increase the risk of fires in nature and forest areas. Since the end of May, the fire danger “code yellow” has been in effect in the Flemish region until further notice. In the fire that broke out near the German border on May 30, 170 hectares of forest and reeds were damaged. (AA)
