Ukrainian government officials confirm that the long-awaited counter-offensive has begun. At least that’s what the American news channel ABC reports. The fact that so far there has been no talk of an offensive has to do with “operational secrecy,” says defense specialist Peter Wijninga of the Center for Strategic Studies in The Hague.
“We saw troop movements in Bachmoet last week. And we’ve seen it in the south over the last few days,’ says Wijninga. About six kilometers of land would have been gained by now. “This is a serious troop move.”

Surprise attack
Last week, the Ukrainian military released a video in which soldiers put their fingers to their mouths demanding silence about an offensive. The fact that it is being openly discussed now has to do with “operational secrecy”. “They want to surprise the Russians at a certain time and place. That means you keep it as secret as possible.”
Photos of Ukrainian Leopard-2 tanks at the front near Zaporizhia also appeared today. Ukraine may try to break through the Russian lines with these tanks. It is not known if the photos are authentic. But according to Wijninga the images are a new sign of the ongoing Ukrainian offensive.
Trouble
It is difficult to predict what will happen in the next few days. In some cases there are tens of kilometers between the lines. “You can’t get over it in a few days. It will take some effort.’
