Stoltenberg: Ukraine must receive security guarantees
NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg participated in a podcast broadcast by the US-based think tank “Center for a New American Security” as part of the 2023 National Security Conference.
Asked about Ukraine’s NATO membership, Stoltenberg stressed that all members agree on this issue, but the main goal is to support Ukraine’s survival.
Stating that after the war is over, NATO should discuss options for providing security guarantees to Ukraine, Jens Stoltenberg said arrangements are needed to prevent Russia from redeploying its forces for another attack.
At the same time, Stoltenberg reminded that he would only provide full security guarantees to members in accordance with Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, which stipulates that “an attack on one member shall be considered an attack on all members.”
Noting that he expects a strong signal of support for Ukraine at the Vilnius Summit next month, Stoltenberg said other key priorities for the Alliance will also be discussed at the summit, including strengthened deterrence and a stronger commitment to increased spending on defending. (AA)
