Blood was shed at graduation ceremony in the US
End-of-year graduation ceremonies for schools across the US were marred by the horrifying event that took place in Richmond, the capital of Virginia.
As a result of the fire opened by an unidentified person, two people lost their lives and five people were injured.
Richmond police apprehended the suspect, who was attempting to flee the scene, as a result of the investigation that began right after the incident. As a result of the search for the suspect, five firearms were found. The police continue to deepen the investigation into the suspect and investigate the causes of the incident.
The location where the event took place is one of the largest parks in the city and a graduation ceremony was held near a theater. Among the dead were an 18-year-old high school student and a 36-year-old adult. Among those injured in the incident are a 14-year-old boy and four men between the ages of 31 and 58. Additionally, during the incident, a passing vehicle struck a 9-year-old boy, injuring him.
Making a statement after the event, Richmond Public Schools Inspector Jason Kamras said in an emotional tone: “I have no more words on this subject. I’m sick of seeing people get shot, seeing our kids get shot. And I ask the entire community to stop this,” he said.
While Richmond and the entire United States are in deep shock after this horrific event, school and community leaders are calling for more action to be taken for such events. While it was emphasized that everything possible should be done for the safety of schools and students, the issue of gun control came up again.
