‘Russia is consistent in blaming Ukraine’ Related articles

By convening the UN Security Council, Russia has consistently blamed Ukraine. So says Joost Bosman, Moscow correspondent for BNR. “They want to do everything possible to prove they are innocent.” Both countries suspect each other of being behind the dam tearing down.

Ukraine had previously convened a meeting of the Security Council. The Russians have often pointed an accusing finger at Ukraine. Both countries accuse each other of destroying the dam.

The Russian variant of the US FBI also launched a criminal investigation today. Blowing up the dam would be an act of terrorism, Bosman says. “But no matter how you look at it, we don’t know.”

An investigation into what happened could potentially take years. Both sides continue shelling the affected area. “Until then, we can only speculate who would be most interested in this,” Bosman says.

The international media are increasingly pointing to Russia as the culprit. For example, the BBC quotes a NATO source specifically pointing to the Russians. And it is also clear to Prime Minister Rutte that the Russians are behind it. The question is whether a meeting of the United Nations Security Council may not have a negative outcome for Russia.

“If it’s a staged action, then it’s not meant for the outside world”

Joost Bosman, Moscow correspondent

“If it’s a staged action, then it’s not intended for the outside world. But just to show their own people that Russia is playing tricks,’ says Bosman. “By going to the UN Security Council, the Russians are, as it were, saying to their own people: We are being wronged, we are conducting an investigation.”

Russia most important

According to Bosman, it is clear that the Russians would benefit most from a blown dam. As a result, an important connecting road was lost, making it less easy for Ukraine to get tanks and armored vehicles across the Dnieper River. “Surely that would be in favor of the Russians in that sense.”
