Rutte visits Serbia: ‘More EU influence’ Related articles

Prime Minister Mark Rutte will visit Serbia in early July, together with Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo and Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, Hague sources told BNR. “The question will be whether or not the Balkan countries can be brought into the European sphere of influence,” says Geert Jan Hahn, Europe reporter at BNR.

For Rutte and Bettel it will also be a visit to act as ‘peacemakers’ in the conflict between Serbia and Kosovo. It will be different for De Croo, thinks Hahn. “It is said that it is mainly because Belgium will become the EU presidency at some point, so it wants to bring the agenda items up to standard.”

The visit will take place on 3 and 4 July, immediately after the European summit and shortly before the NATO summit in Lithuania. Earlier, leaders of European countries, including Rutte, also visited Moldova. “At the time, European leaders were also very busy with the Balkans.”
