A German court on Wednesday sentenced Lina E. to five years and three months in prison but released her pending an appeal because she had been detained since 2020. The judge found it proved that Lina E, a 28-year-old far-left activist, led a gang that attacked people with hammers, iron bars and a baseball in at least six cases.

Lina E. was convicted along with three accomplices. The decision to release Lina E. has sparked anger in Germany: it implies that violence against the far right is acceptable. According to her, she E. she is not feeling well, she had to hand over her identity card and passport pending the appeal.
