Tesla CEO Elon Musk receives a shower of praise during a visit to China. On Chinese social media he is seen as a ‘pioneer’, a ‘brother’ and some even see him as the future president of the United States. It is the first time in three years that Musk has visited China, since then the competition for Tesla has increased significantly, mainly due to electric cars made in China.
Musk will speak with China’s foreign, trade and industry ministers during his visit. He also had dinner with battery supplier CATL CEO Zeng Yuqun. While little is known about these conversations, Musk’s visit sparked excitement on Chinese social media.
Idol
“He’s a global idol,” writes one user. “Elon Musk is just amazing, if only China could have someone like Elon Musk.” After China’s economy reopened, several CEOs visited China, but neither Apple CEO Tim Cook nor JP Morgan’s Jamie Dimon and Starbucks’ Laxman Narasimhan became a hot topic. Not on Musk’s Twitter, that platform is blocked in China.
