Recep Tayyip Erdogan has won the Turkish presidential election, state media said based on early results. After counting more than 40% of the votes, Erdogan leads with more than 56%, according to the Anadolu news agency. According to the NTV channel, Erdogan was at 58 percent after counting more than 35 percent of the votes.
The first results come mainly from Erdogan’s strongholds, so the picture could change. Halk TV, an opposition channel, reports that Kemal Kilicdaroglu (74) of the centre-left Republican People’s Party (CHP) narrowly won.
In the first round, Erdogan was just short of an absolute majority with 49.5%, so a second round was needed. The 69-year-old Erdogan has now been in power for twenty years, first as prime minister and since 2014 as president.
