Diplomatic passports of 10 former ministers in Pakistan revoked

According to Geo News television, the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports announced that it has decided to cancel the diplomatic passports of 9 former ministers of the Pakistan Justice Movement Party (PTI) and the leader of the Awami Muslim League (AML). , former minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed.

In this context, the diplomatic passports of 10 former ministers, including former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmoud Qureshi and former Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, were cancelled.

The politicians in question were cabinet members from July 2018 to April 2022, when the Imran Khan government was in office.

Under Pakistani law, members of the Cabinet must surrender their passports within 30 days of the expiration of their term.

It is unclear whether the ministers in question handed over their passports after the fall of the Han government in April 2022 or why their passports were revoked 13 months after leaving office.

However, it is assessed that the government took that step after discussions between Imran Khan and the government.

Dozens of PTI politicians, including Imran Khan, were banned from leaving the country on May 25.

HAN ARREST AND PROTESTS

At least 10 people died in the protests that began after the arrest of former Prime Minister Khan on May 9 for the case in which he was accused of corruption in Pakistan.

Many public and private properties were damaged during the demonstrations and police vehicles were set on fire. Military institutions in different cities, including the General Staff in Rawalpindi, were also attacked during the protests.

The Constitutional Court declared Han’s arrest on May 11 illegal and ordered his release as soon as possible. Han was released on bail on May 12.

Pakistani Home Minister Rana Sanaullah said in a statement on May 26 that 33 civilians have been handed over to the armed forces to stand trial in military courts for alleged involvement in violence at demonstrations that began after Khan’s arrest. (AA)
