Weapons maker Kalashnikov shifts focus to kamikaze drones Related articles

The Kalashnikov arms company is shifting its focus from the well-known AK-47 weapons to kamikaze drones. Those drones are currently being used en masse by Russia in the war in Ukraine.

Russia currently draws mainly from the supply of kamikaze drones provided by Iran. However, the country also wants to set up its own production line to become less dependent on Iranian Shahed drones. Kalashnikov begins new UAV production, Russia’s largest arms company said in a statement.

Increase production

A new Kalashnikov division will focus on producing so-called stray ammunition – or kamikaze drones, which explode as soon as a target is in sight. “It is designed for high-precision destruction of individual and grouped enemy targets.”

Kalashnikov, named after Mikhail Kalashnikov, designer of the AK-47 assault rifle, will also produce launchers and control technology. “In 2024, we will be able to increase the number of drones produced by a multiple,” said the Kalashnikov chief executive.
