Internet restricted to children under 15 years of age in France
The French Senate discussed the bill aimed at combating hate on social media.
The bill, which was accepted in session, requires children under the age of 15 to get their parents’ permission to register on social media platforms.
Consequently, the platforms will need to use a system to verify the age of the users and if the minors have the permission of their parents.
Platforms that do not comply with the rules can be fined up to 1% of their worldwide turnover.
With the bill, social media platforms will post bullying prevention messages on social media.
Parents will be able to request the platforms to suspend the social media accounts of their 15-year-old children.
AGE OF REGISTRATION IN SOCIAL NETWORKS LESS THAN 8
The bill also covers the obligation of social networks and online platforms to respond to legal requests related to electronic content within 10 days as part of judicial investigations. This period granted to the platforms is a maximum of 8 hours when there is a risk of serious damage to people or property.
The bill, which was previously accepted in Parliament, will be discussed in a mixed commission made up of 14 parliamentarians.
According to the National Commission for Information and Liberties (CNIL), 82 percent of children aged 10 to 14 in France use the Internet without parental consent.
According to CNIL research in 2021, the age to register on a social media platform for the first time in the country was lowered to 8 years.
