Compensation of $19 million to the family of the teenager killed by the police
In the case of the murder of a young man with mental health problems in the US state of Colorado by the deputy sheriff, it was reported that his family will receive compensation of 19 million dollars.
The family of Christian Glass, who died at the age of 22, announced that an agreement was reached with state and local authorities to pay compensation of $19 million for the case in question.
The family pointed out that within the scope of conciliation the condition of developing police intervention training in the event of similar events is also included.
The family’s lawyer, Siddhartha H. Rathod, claimed that 7 police officers on the scene could prevent loss of life just by talking and that they wanted to encourage police to communicate that way. Rathod noted that the $19 million in damages in the Glass case was the highest settlement amount ever reached in the state of Colorado.
Glass was stranded in a mountainous area within Clear Creek in 2022 and sought help from the police. In calls for help, Glass was noted to use expressions that could indicate that she was hallucinating and having mental problems, as if someone was following her.
Police teams, who arrived at the scene, broke Glass’s glass, whom they wanted to get out of the vehicle but were unable to convince, and intervened first with tear gas and then with an electroshock gun.
Clear Creek Deputy Sheriff Andrew Buen killed the 22-year-old after Glass drew a knife.
The family also accused police of causing her death by interfering with Glass without assessing her psychological state.
The investigative panel also found Deputy Sheriff Buen and his supervisor, Sergeant Kyle Gould, guilty of causing Glass’s death by “increasing tensions”, although there was no indication that he posed any danger. (AA)
