And with that, Russia appears to be under attack from within. Bosman says there are two Russian groups: Freedom of Russia and the Russian Volunteer Corps. “We still know that Volunteer Corps from the beginning of March,” Bosman explains. “They carried out an attack in the Bryansk region, which also borders Ukraine.”

“They are essentially attacking their own country”

Joost Bosman

So tonight it was hit in the Belgorod region, when drone strikes were carried out. Although this is nothing new, according to Bosman it is rare that there are groups that have crossed the border with artillery and tanks. “Their country, essentially.”

Contradictory

Bosman points out that there are many mixed messages. The region in question consists of a garland of four village centers bordering Ukraine, the first two of which are said to have been taken over by the groups. However, it’s hard to say exactly what is true. According to Bosman, there is confirmation of the fighting. “There are photos showing smoke plumes and videos showing impacts,” Bosman says. “And the governor of the region has also acknowledged the fighting.”

Kremlin

According to the Kremlin, “every effort is being made” to push those groups back, get them across the border and “destroy” them, but Russian citizens remain concerned, according to Bosman. This is evident from reports that they have asked the governor for their own weapons. “They don’t trust the security services anymore,” he continues.

Bosman says many Russians see it as a failure, although it depends on how it turns out. “But the fact that that happens is obviously very damaging to Russian confidence, especially in those regions.”
