An analysis of supermarket sales in the UK shows that the Brits see higher price increases in no fewer than ten product groups than Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands. Dairy products in particular have risen in price, but pet feed, detergents, baby milk and diapers are also among the biggest increases, according to researcher Circana. For example, a packet of detergent in the UK costs on average €5.06, while the same packet costs €2.68 in Spain.

Experts expect the report to spark debate over rising food prices in the UK. Consumers are growing increasingly frustrated with rising prices, which are posting the steepest rise since 1977.

New priority

According to the Bank of England, the cost of living in the UK is now the country’s biggest problem, “paying off” energy costs. With this in mind, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has launched some studies focusing on food supply chains.
