The number of deaths in Ecuador due to landslides rises to 56
In the statement of the National Secretariat for Risk Management of Ecuador, it was indicated that in the landslide in the town of Alausí, in the state of Chimborazo, new corpses were detected.
It was shared that the number of people who lost their lives in the disaster increased to 56 and that the search for the missing people continues. The authorities specified that there are still 30 more people underground and a meticulous work is being carried out to reach the bodies.
It was announced that 163 houses were damaged and 60 houses were completely destroyed by the landslide. Local media reports claimed that cracks had formed in the region’s mountain for some time, triggering the landslide.
The Ministry of Transport and Public Works of Ecuador had reported that it was working continuously to reopen the closed roads and that on March 30 an “emergency” was declared in the state of Chimborazo. (AA)
