The Pentagon overestimated the value of munitions, missiles and other equipment sent to Ukraine by about $3 billion due to an accounting error. The British newspaper The Guardian writes it. The mistake could lead to more weapons being sent to Kiev.
To determine the value, the Pentagon used the cost of replacing equipment, rather than the actual value of the weapons when they were purchased and depreciated, the paper said.
Debt ceiling
“We found irregularities in how we assessed the value of equipment supplied to Ukraine,” a defense official told Reuters. The US government may have to ask Congress for additional money while debt ceiling negotiations are still ongoing.
Republican Senator Roger Wicker talks about a “big mistake”. Our priority must be a Ukrainian victory over Putin. Unilaterally changing military aid calculations is an attempt to deceive and undermines this goal.
More than 33 billion euros
The Pentagon recently estimated the total value of US military aid to Ukraine since the start of the war at $36.9 billion (nearly $33.7 billion). It is now likely to be revised downwards. These are mainly artillery missile launchers, a Patriot anti-aircraft system. In addition, 1.5 million cartridges for Howitzer pistols were sent to Ukraine.
