“Wife-finding centers” open in Iran for those who want to get married
Mehdi Muttakifer, Director General of Planning and Social Development at Iran’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, said “matchmaking centers” were opened in 33 locations in 15 provinces to facilitate starting a family.
Speaking to the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA), Muttakifer explained the measures taken against the problem of not getting married in the country, which has been on the agenda in recent years. Muttakifer said: “Matching centers have been opened at 33 locations in 15 states.”
Muttakifer listed some of the provinces where these centers are located, 8 in the capital Tehran, 5 in Qom, 4 in Isfahan, two in East Azerbaijan, Razavi Khorasan and Kohgiluye Buyer Ahmed, West Azerbaijan, Chahar Mahal-Bahtiari, North Khorasan, Zanjan He also stated that there are centers in Kermanshah and Gulistan provinces.
Muttakifer stated that some of the centers opened to facilitate family formation are located in mosques and cultural centers and provide free services, and that some centers charge a fee for their services.
DECREASE IN POPULATION GROWTH
According to data on the website of the Statistical Institute of Iran, the country’s population is 85 million 56 thousand 136. In recent years, Iranian officials have been repeatedly warned about the declining rate of population growth and the aging society.
Mohammad Ismail Akbari, Adviser to the Iranian Health Minister, stated on June 10, 2020 that Iran will become the oldest country in the world in 30 years due to the declining birth rate.
The Vice Chancellor of Iran University of Health Sciences, Dr. Muhammed Tabatabai, in his statement on May 15, stated that the infertility rate in married couples in the country exceeds 20 percent and said that this situation will affect negatively to the population in the coming years, he pointed out that it is one of the important factors that affect the matter.
Iranian sociologist Shehla Kazimipur also claimed that the birth rate in her country had fallen to 1.7 and said that the population growth rate would fall to “zero” after about 20 years. (AA)
