European press: Erdogan can no longer be elected without support

While millions went to the polls in Turkey yesterday, the winner of the presidential elections did not come out in the first round.

In the second round, foreign Turks will cast the first votes. Voting will take place between May 20 and 24, 2023 abroad and at customs. However, contrary to expectations abroad, Erdogan was unable to make much of a difference this time. Erdogan, who got 65 percent in the previous elections, hung around 58 percent this time.

Voters in Turkey will go to the polls on May 28 for the second round. Voting will take place at the customs gates until the evening of May 28.

‘ERDOGAN NEEDS SUPPORT’

The European media are also closely following the elections in Türkiye. While Der Spiegel magazine said: “Erdogan needs the support of his opponents or another opponent to break 50 percent in the second round,” Bild newspaper ran the headline “Turkey’s fate left for second round.”

Newspapers such as Switzerland’s Blick and Austria’s Der Standard gave extensive coverage of the election results. Blick announced last night’s developments to his readers in written and visual form.
