Zelensky in Germany, will receive the prestigious Charlemagne Prize later today

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky has arrived in Germany. In Berlin he was received by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. It is the Ukrainian leader’s first visit to Germany since Russia invaded his country.

Zelensky confirmed in the night between Saturday and Sunday that he had arrived in Germany. “Already in Berlin,” he wrote Chirping. ‘Weapons. Big package. Air defense. Reconstruction. EUROPEAN UNION. BORN. Security,” he continued in the short message. On Saturday, Germany promised its biggest arms package to Ukraine so far. Which is worth 2.7 billion euros.

“Heaviest Period”

Zelensky later arrived at the presidential castle of Bellevue for an interview with Steinmeier. There he signed the guest book. “In the most difficult period of Ukraine’s recent history, Germany proved to be a true friend and a reliable ally,” he wrote in English. He concluded with the words: “Glory to Ukraine. Thanks Germany.’

The Ukrainian leader is also received by Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Authorities have implemented strict security measures in parts of Berlin due to the visit. For example, boats cannot approach BundeskanzleramtScholz’s office. Residents were asked not to leave their homes without ID.

Charlemagne Prize

During the afternoon Zelenskyj will receive the prestigious Charlemagne Prize in Aachen. According to German media, he wants to receive it personally. The prize has been awarded every year since 1950 to people committed to European unity.

Zelensky visited Italy on Saturday. There he met, among others, the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Pope Francis. He then flew to Berlin on a German government plane with a German Air Force escort.
