The UK has supplied Ukraine with long-range cruise missiles, CNN reports citing senior Western sources. Ukraine’s long-desired weapons could play a role in Kiev’s expected counter-offensive. London’s Defense Ministry declined to comment.
It was recently revealed that the British have asked companies to supply missiles with a range of up to 300 kilometers, but London said on Tuesday that a final decision had not yet been made.
According to CNN, the missiles supplied by the British are of the Storm Shadow type, developed by the United Kingdom and France and made by the company MBDA Missile Systems. They are usually launched from above and have a range of over 250 kilometres.
Kiev does not want to touch Russian territory
This allows the Ukrainians to reach deep into Russian-occupied territory in eastern Ukraine or Crimea. Kiev reportedly assured London that the missiles would not be used on targets inside Russia. The missiles that the United States has delivered so far have a range of about 80 kilometers. Washington is currently reluctant to deliver long-range shells.
Earlier this year, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said his government was considering supplying Kiev with long-range weapons. This is not the first time that Britain has surpassed the United States in arms supplies. The British were the first to announce that they would send modern Western tanks to Ukraine.
