Protests continue in Pakistan

According to national media reports, demonstrations in the capital Islamabad, Peshawar, Lahore, Karachi and many other cities continue until the second day of Khan’s arrest.

In the capital, Islamabad, protesters blocked traffic on the Kashmir-Srinagar highway.

As the police responded with tear gas and rubber bullets at the protesters, the protesters hurled stones and sticks at the security forces. The protesters did not allow the passage of drivers who wanted to use the road.

Malik Harun Ramazan, a supporter of the Pakistan Justice Movement Party (PTI), told Anadolu Agency that he came to Islamabad from the city of Attock and said: “This is the central point. I came here to defend our leader, Imran Khan.” saying.

Stating that Khan was illegally arrested, Ramazan said: “We are here until Imran Khan is released. I don’t know how long this will take, but we are here.” He used the phrase.

THE PAKISTAN ARMY BEGAN

In Peshawar, protesters stormed the Election Commission office and disabled the materials inside.

Protesters also set fire to a police vehicle in the Gülşen-i İkbal district of Karachi.

At the call of the federal government, the Pakistani army began to take over various points in Islamabad to ensure security.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Last June, the coalition government claimed that Khan and his wife had bought billions of rupees worth of land from Pakistan’s top property magnate Malik Riaz to build an educational institute.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) claims that Khan’s PTI government made a deal with Riaz, which inflicted more than $239 million in losses on the national treasury.

In December 2019, Riaz agreed to hand over assets, including $239 million worth of property, to the UK’s National Crime Agency as part of an investigation into “dirty money”.

Pakistani Home Minister Rana Sanaullah said British authorities returned $239 million to Pakistan in connection with money laundering, but Khan gave the money to Riaz instead of keeping it in the national treasury.

The arrest warrant for Han was issued by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

The development came after Khan accused a top intelligence official of being behind his murder.

Yesterday, the Pakistani military described former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s claims that a top intelligence official was behind his assassination as “irresponsible and baseless”.

Khan started a march from Lahore to Islamabad on October 28, 2022, arguing that the coalition government did not declare early elections.

Khan was wounded in both legs when his convoy was fired upon in Wazirabad on November 3, 2022. One person was killed and 13 people injured in the attack.

In the no-confidence motion held in the Pakistani parliament on April 10, 2022, the Imran Khan government fell with 174 votes in favour.

Shahbaz Sharif, brother of Nawaz Sharif, who served as prime minister for three terms in the country, was elected prime minister with the support of an absolute majority with 174 votes in the elections held in Parliament on April 11, 2022. ( AA)
