Roadmap for Ankara-Damascus reconciliation from Russia
Speaking at the meeting that brought together the Turkish and Syrian Foreign Ministers for the first time in years in Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced that they had prepared a draft roadmap for the normalization of Ankara-Damascus relations.
Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Iranian Foreign Minister Hüseyin Emir Abdullahiyan and Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Mikdad attended the meeting held in the building of the Russian Foreign Ministry in the capital, Moscow.
In his opening speech before the meeting, Lavrov stated that the basic principle is to facilitate the safe and voluntary return of Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons to their place of permanent residence. Expressing that the start of the Turkey-Syria normalization process also creates a positive atmosphere in the Middle East region, Lavrov said, “The best outcome of our meeting today may be an agreement to instruct experts to prepare a draft of roadmap for standardization. of Turkey-Syria relations for the next ministerial meeting. This will then be presented to our heads of state,” he said.
‘US’ PURPOSE IS INSTABILITY IN SYRIA’
Emphasizing that the United States supports the officials who declared the so-called administration in the east of the Euphrates and sends weapons to the illegal armed formations formed by them, Lavrov said: “According to the information we have learned, the Americans have been deploying the so-called’ Syria’ around Raqqa with the involvement of local Arab tribes, ISIS militants and other terrorist organizations. He began to form his Free Army. “The goal is clear: to use these militants against the Syrian authorities to destabilize the situation in the country,” he said.
Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu shared on his Twitter account about the meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Quadrangle. “We emphasize the need for cooperation in the fight against terrorism, providing the infrastructure for cooperative returns, advancing the political process and protecting Syria’s territorial integrity,” Çavuşoğlu said.
Speaking to reporters about the meeting, Iranian Foreign Minister Abdullahiyan said that the political solution in Syria should be based on Damascus’s sovereignty over the entire territory, and that Turkey can play an important role in this regard. The Iranian minister argued that the deployment of the Syrian army in the border regions could ease Turkey’s concerns about terrorist organizations.
