Temperature records are broken in Vietnam and Laos

Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam and Laos have seen the highest temperatures on record.

According to the CNN report, the temperature reached 44.2 degrees Celsius in the Tuong Duong region of Vietnam on May 6, while thermometers marked 43.5 degrees Celsius in the neighboring city of Luang Prabang, Laos. Meteorological historian Maximiliano Herrera noted that this was the highest temperature ever recorded in Vietnam.

In Laos, the highest temperature was recorded last month at 42.7. Herrera claimed that the new temperature record was broken with the weekend temperature reaching 43.5 degrees Celsius.

The Southeast Asian region experiences the hottest times of the year before the onset of the seasonal monsoon rains in April and May each year. Temperatures across the region are expected to return to normal in the coming days, but research indicates that unprecedented weather events will become more common as the climate crisis intensifies.

In the study, it was determined that the incidence of dangerous heat waves of 39.4 degrees Celsius or higher will increase 3 to 10 times with the start of the new century. In the aforementioned investigation, it was highlighted that in the tropics, which cover a large part of the Asian continent, the days that reach 51 degrees Celsius, which is defined as “extremely dangerous temperature”, will double in the next century.
