The country in economic crisis decided to sell historical buildings: Castle and caravanserai for sale by owner

In Iran, which is struggling with the economic crisis, the government has decided to sell many historic buildings at auction to generate revenue.

In the statement made by Iran’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Tourism, it was stated that 19 different historical buildings and structures in the country will be for sale from May 22. While it is claimed that many historic buildings will be up for sale online, Mohammed Gharipour, one of the country’s leading historians, said: “This is a worrying decision and, frankly, it seems like it was taken in haste. It’s frightening that there has been no investigation behind this decision.”

Among the historical buildings that will be for sale in Iran are castles, caravanserais and residences.

It was claimed that Rayen Castle, located in the Kerman region and estimated to be 1000 years old, will also be sold. In addition to Rayen Castle, known as one of the most important structures in pre-Islamic history, the caravanserais and residences of many historically important leaders are also up for sale.

The experts pointed out that the people who buy these land and structures may demolish the buildings, saying, “If these areas are sold, these buildings are at great risk.” While the Iranian administration has conducted similar sales in the past, many historic buildings have been converted into hotels and restaurants.

Inflation in Iran, which has been in a historic crisis with events triggered by both sanctions and pressure at home, had exceeded 50 percent.
